Using the factor of surprise, the designers transformed a store into a house residence. Named after its characteristic façade, the 337sqm Barcode Loft is located in the south suburbs of Athens, nestled within the urban landscape.

The challenge in this project was to bring natural light inside the long ground floor layout. Brainstorming about it, the idea of corrugated stainless-steel sheets occurred. The large volume hosting the building’s shared staircase, the apartment’s private staircase leading to the mezzanine, the WC and storage space, was the ideal surface to cover with a reflective material in order to bring natural light even in the most remote parts of the space.

The double-height living area forms the heart of the apartment. As the residents love having friends over to chat, eat, watch movies and play, it made absolute sense to transform this large open space into a multipurpose area combining all that. When entering this space, a ping-pong table is there to welcome both kids and adults. The kitchen and dining area is where the magic happens; it’s the place and time to be social. Finally, the elevated living room awaits you for a relaxing movie night next to the backyard’s jungle.

Upstairs are located the more private spaces; the master bedroom with a master bathroom, and the bedroom of the youngest resident with his well-deserved spacious playroom area.

Art and architecture have always been decidedly intertwined; it is no different here with the architectural interventions having an equal role to the curation and utilization of the objects and art pieces very carefully selected.

The interior of the house is intended to act as a “blank canvas” for a mix of textured, colorful objects and furniture that fill the space reminding the residents of the trips where they collected them. In this visual complexity every element tells a common story. The plants in the living area are placed to “soften the cement”, while blurring the interior with the backyard landscape.
